The school complex of Ellinogermaniki Agogi was expanded by incorporating into it an existing neighboring building, which was refurbished to house educational activities. It is a two-storey reinforced concrete building, which was extended by the addition of an annex of steel structure. Inserted between the existing building and the annex there is a roofed gallery, with a height of 2 floors, which unifies the two structures.
The ground floor of the existing building, houses the Lyceum classrooms of Ellinogermaniki Agogi. In plan, the classrooms follow one another, along the long side, while the interior of this section runs through a linear aisle. Sanitary areas and the staircase leading to the first floor and the basement, are located towards the roofed gallery. In the basement there are spaces for the engine room, electrical panels and storage. The stairwell also has an elevator with wheelchair specifications.
The first floor of the existing building, was arranged to house office spaces with an open plan as well as closed offices, a meeting room (with the possibility of dividing into two smaller ones), auxiliary spaces (small kitchen, warehouse, etc.) and facilities, including a one for the disabled.
The annex is smaller in area than the existing building and has its own internal staircase. The ground floor of the annex houses the school canteen with access from the roofed gallery and the forecourt, while in the first floor there is a multipurpose hall. The roofed gallery has a free height of 7 meters, and was configured as a stopping place for the students as well as a service area from the canteen. To protect against severe weather conditions, a special metal roller has been installed across the entire width of the gallery, which in case of rain descends to a height of 2 meters. Access to the multi-purpose room on the annex’s first floor is via a dedicated staircase.
In terms of materials, the outer shell of the building (existing and annex) has been clad entirely in white decorative brick, of the same color as the one found in the other buildings of Ellinogermaniki Agogis’ complex. This choice was aimed at obtaining the same look and feel of the existing school complex.
In the interior of the building, earth tones are used for the areas of the halls and the aisle. All walls are lined with firebricks. Finally, the internal doors are made of veneer wood from Fraxinus and the ceiling is covered with sound-absorbing material from wood wool.
In contrast to the ground floor, the interior of the offices on the first floor is dominated by white shades. The exception is the chairs which are yellow to create contrast. The flooring has a distinctive but repetitive pattern, that enhances the linearity of the space.
Finally, the surrounding area has been partially paved with large white and dark colored slabs. The remaining part is dominated by compacted soil, on a large surface of which trees have been planted.
